Trick and a Treat...Happy Halloween

Halloween is tomorrow. Let me say it again...TOMORROW is Halloween! Where has the time gone!?!?!?! No seriously!? We are gonna start gobblin' any moment and I think some people will skip right to Ho! Ho! Ho!

As the holidays approach the journey of staying healthy gets harder and harder! You can read all about my quest to stay healthy and get my students healthy too HERE! Coming soon to my TPT store is a unit all about it!

Here's a little trick for you on Halloween...resist eating all the candy in the trick or treat bowl by simply buying all types of candy that you don't like! You won't even have the urge to sneak a few! Here are the candies sitting in my trick or treat bowl.

As a treat for you my store is on sale through Sunday! Happy Halloween!

Suck it up...and one day you won't have to SUCK IT IN!

As a teacher it is REALLY easy to get into a lot of unhealthy habits and I admit that I have fallen victim to many of those habits. {Eating unhealthy food from the cafeteria, enjoying all the holiday candy and eating the goldfish that were meant for math...I never do that...really I don't! :/ Oh and how about all those happy hour drinks and snacks!?!} Just as difficult as it is to make healthy eating choices, it is also a challenge to come home from a long day and find the energy to even get off the couch, going for a run seems absurd! As this school year began I made a promise to myself that I would inconvenience myself, if necessary, to stay healthy.
As a way to stay accountable in my journey to stay healthy, over the next few months I will be sharing my triumphs, tips and struggles with you. I encourage you to join me too...it may not be easy but it will be worth it in the long run!

My first step in my journey has been to get a personal trainer. In the past I loved to run and I could run 10 miles at a time...and LOVE doing it, but somewhere along the way I lost my motivation and now even a simple mile run seems like a form of torture. I knew that if I got a trainer, that I would have appointments to keep and money lose...so I would never miss a workout.
The beast below, plus my trainer Heather has been kicking my butt lately...and I LOVE IT! I love being sore and feeling muscles that I haven't felt in a long time. I appreciate my new level of energy I have throughout the day and the motivation that my workouts bring. I have learned a lot about the human body and ways to make it work without being bored, time consuming or redundant. I'm already looking forward to my next session tomorrow! :)

When I first met with Heather, my personal trainer, the first thing she asked was "How is your diet?". When I told her about my diet, her biggest concern was that I was skipping breakfast daily. If you are like me, waking up, getting ready and being at work on time is an accomplishment in itself...asking me to eat a healthy breakfast is like asking me to leave work with a messy desk...it's just not happening! {Although I never seem to have problems stopping at Dunkin Donuts for a donut...hmmm!?!?!} Heather recommended Quest Bars {I found mine at Vitamin Shoppe and GNC.} as a breakfast option. So I am a weirdo, but if you show me a TINY "candy bar" and tell me that's all I am going to eat for a meal, I think you are insane. I obviously don't have logic, because that TINY "candy bar" is a meal that I wouldn't even be eating normally. Anyhow I tried the Quest Bars and they have ROCKED MY WORLD! They are so delicious, they require no prep, they have lots of fiber, low sugar and tons of protein...and the best part---they keep me full for hours! I don't find myself rummaging around my classroom in need of a snack because I'm famished. If you are a non-breakfast eater, I suggest you try them out!!!
As I am learning ways to have a healthier life, I have been inspired to share ways with my students how to begin healthy habits at a young age. The more I am exposed to healthier lifestyle options, I reflect on the "Freshmen 15", "The First Year Teacher 10" and all the yo-yo dieting between that, and see how having a strong foundation in healthy lifestyle choices could have impacted my life. I want to teach and inspire students to develop these skills at a young age, and to carry them with them for the rest of their lives. I am in the process of creating a Health Unit to help guide instruction, including things in the unit that I learn in my journey to get healthy! This unit will focus on a balanced life, that includes exercise, healthy and even junk food...cause we all know no one really wants to give it ALL up, nor do they have to!

Check back in a few days for a healthy tip for Halloween! :)

Candy Corn Fun

Do you have that love/hate relationship with candy corn like I do?!?! I personally do not like candy corn, but I admit that when ever I see candy corn I feel the need to eat one. I guess I think "this time I will like candy corn", and shockingly...I NEVER DO!

Although I don't like to eat candy corn I do like to decorate with candy corn! Here is one of the easiest and cutest Fall decorations that I do with candy corn...

I am also planning on being a candy corn for Halloween...what do you think? {I really just want to wear a tutu!}

Anyhow, my students always seem to love the plastic tasting candy, so every Fall candy corn math is one of my favorite activities! I put together a little pack of activities, you can check it out HERE.
Candy Corn Number Man
A fun way to decorate for the season without being "Halloween-y"!

Candy Corn Measuring
The students measure different candy pictures using candy corn!

Addin' Up the Candy Corn
Practice making groups and joining them together to create addition stories using candy corn.

Corny Number Bingo
Numbers to 20 counting or number recognition bingo.

A Corny Mouth
Use candy corn and dice to practice counting, addition or subtraction skills!

Roll & Add 10 More
Use base ten blocks, dice and candy corns to practice base ten skills.

Eat the Sum
A very yummy way to practice addition.

Eatin' Up the Candy Corn
A concrete way to model subtraction.

What's your favorite thing to do with candy corn?

Pumpkins. Spiders. Bats. {A Spooky FREEBIE too!} Oh My!

So if you read my Five for Friday post HERE you know that last weekend was all about pumpkin taste testing and Halloween decorating! Well it happened and it was AWESOME! The verdict is in and pumpkin m&m's are a NO GO...but pumpkin spice oreos are where it is at! {Even better if you put them in the freezer!}

Channeling my inner Hocus Pocus I decked out the house for Halloween!

And of course I had to get some Halloween nails to match my Halloween house! ;)

Next week the creepiness will extend to the classroom!  The kids will be working in lots of math and ELA centers filled with pumpkins, bats and spiders. Oh my!

Since you made it all the way to the end of this extremely long post, here is a quick freebie for you! My kids ate up the "Red Hot Reader" and the "Sound the Alarm Writer" awards {Read about it HERE!} that I did during fire safety week, so I knew I wanted to do something similar for these Halloween-erific days. Really, it is a trick and a treat...I will trick the kids to work hard, and treat them for their efforts. All eyes will be out, searching for "Spooktacular Readers" and "Bootastic Writers" These students will be rewarded with the privilege of wearing a Frankenstein mask to read and using Halloween-y pencils for writing. As a sweet little treat, they will be rewarded with eyeball candies. I mean, who doesn't love to eat eyeballs? {Everything you need to complete this little freebie was purchased at either the Dollar Tree or Target Dollar Spot. Dollar deals get me every time!!!} Grab your freebie below!

Five for Friday!

Happy Friday! I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for my Five for Friday!

I feel like this picture speaks for itself...blow my mind amazingness!!!! October + pumpkins= happiness...and I am on a mission to put pumpkin into every meal I can. I even contemplated finding pumpkin toothpaste. Too much?!?!

This week we started Fire Safety. The kids are loving it! Every day they ask me "Are we going to have a fire drill?!" Hopefully this week will help us be more prepared for next time we do have a fire drill. I won't lie, the first fire drill of the year was pretty much a HOT MESS...anyone remember Kindergarten Cop!?!

All of our fire learning this week has gotten me excited about watching Chicago Fire again! Anyone else watching? I wish when we went on our field trip to the fire station the fighters looked a little more like this! Wink! ;)

You can read all about our week and grab some freebies too, HERE!

Mo' money NO problems! :) This week we have been learning about community helpers and economics in our community. Who doesn't love money?! Probably my proudest achievement of the week is that the kids are no longer saying that there is just "some old man" on the coins...they now know that those "old men" are past presidents of our AMAZING country!

Here's a little trick for ya...I use money to teach the concepts of greatest and least in math. It is easier for my kids to catch on to these concepts when thinking about money and its value. They tend to understand that they want $10 over $1 because it is GREATER in value!

STOP IT RIGHT NOW...look at what was spotted on the news...HOW LOW WILL IT GO?!?!?! A cool front is on its way. Notice they said cool front, not cold front! :/ I will take it here in South Florida! We are still rocking 90 degrees outside every day, and honestly...girls just wanna wear BOOTS!

Please cross your fingers and blow some cool weather my way. Look at these poor dusty boots that are just dying to come out and play!

This weekend will be filled with pumpkin taste testing and Halloween decorating! Whoop! Whoop! If you are decorating this weekend, you might wanna check out this FREE BOO Pennant! Check back in to see how things turn out!

Happy Weekend!
